3 Ways to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo is a traditional Mexican holiday that celebrates Mexico’s victory against all odds over the French in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Today, while many are unaware of its origins, it’s still a fun holiday celebrated north of the border by Mexicans and Americans alike.
If you’re looking to enjoy this holiday in 2015, here are three ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with family and friends!
- Visit a traditional Mexican restaurantMost major cities have an independently owned traditional Mexican restaurant or two. If you don’t already have a favorite haunt, ask friends or check your local listings to find a restaurant in your neighborhood. Invite friends and enjoy some authentic cuisine together…just be sure to call ahead to make sure you don’t have to wait too long for a table on this popular night.
- Enjoy traditional Mexican music
You’re probably already familiar with mariachi music, but you may be less aware of genres such as Tejano, banda, corrido, or ranchera. Load up your Pandora, Spotify or last.fm with these tunes and jam away to great guitars and vocals. You don’t have to be an aficionado to enjoy this soulful music. - Host your own fiesta
Cinco de Mayo is a great time to host your own party! Ask friends to bring dishes--potluck style--or prepare foods like chiles rellenos (a stuffed pepper dish) or tamales (spiced meat wrapped in masa and cooked in a corn husk). Provide a delicious, gluten-free option for your guests with Nachos Supreme featuring Riceworks crisps. And, if you feel so inclined, make a big pitcher of margaritas for everyone to share.
No matter how you celebrate, enjoy a day that’s all about persevering in the face of great odds. And in the meantime, get more great snacking tips right here on our blog!
