5 Tips to Hosting the Perfect Holiday Party

The holiday season is in full swing, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with a party for family and friends. As party host (AKA Official Holiday Merry-Maker), it’s your responsibility to plan a fun, memorable event. This can be a large undertaking, and it’s easy to forget little details along the way. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Follow these five tips for hosting the perfect holiday party:

1. Send invites to match the occasion.
   Should guests wear black ties and cocktail dresses? Or ugly Christmas sweaters and jeans? Invitations set the tone and theme of any holiday party. For casual get-togethers, don’t mail a printed invite. Instead, consider calling guests individually or creating a private Facebook event where you can share party details.  

2. Plan an inclusive menu.
   Holiday meal planning gets tricky. Gluten-free, dairy-free, nut allergies—the list of dietary restrictions goes on. Consider serving food buffet-style, so guests can create their own plates. 3. Create the ultimate party playlist.
   Turn up that beat! Festive holiday music sets the mood for the party. Create a playlist that balances popular favorites like, “All I want for Christmas is You,” with holiday classics, such as “Jingle Bell Rock.” Add in a few songs without lyrics to play during dinner, so the music doesn’t compete with the conversation.

4. Keep extra gifts on hand.
   Even if the invite says, “No gifts,” a few thoughtful friends may choose to bring one anyway. Stash a few presents around the house to pull out when needed. Bottles of wine, Christmas ornaments, and coffee mugs are great go-to gifts.

5. Up the entertainment.
   Food may seem like the highlight of the party, but try to avoid making it the main event. Plan fun and creative activities for guests to participate in before and after eating. Photo booths, white elephant gift exchanges and group games are simple ways to keep the crowd entertained.
