Spring Cleaning: 6 Ways to a Sparkling, Clutter-Free Home

6 Ways to a Sparkling, Clutter-Free HomeIt’s the time of year again! Time to throw open the windows -finally!-, put away the flannel sheets and prepare your home for the days of more sun and warmer temperatures. But where to start? Does the thought alone of spring cleaning overwhelm you?

We’ll cover 6 different ways to get yourself started, organized and ready to tackle those pesky closets or those junk drawers full of…well…junk. Be sure to keep your energy up with Riceworks crisps or throw together an easy meal from our recipes page.

Step 1: Get This Party Started!

Okay, maybe cleaning isn’t exactly a “party,” but you can make it fun by turning on some dancing music and getting the kids involved too. You’ll be more likely to tackle that extra closet or pile on an extra laundry load of summer clothes if you get excited about what you’re doing. When it’s all said and done, you’ll be able to relax and lounge around in your squeaky clean, organized home! For a little while, at least…

Step 2: Sweat the Small Stuff

Sometimes the smaller clutter can be your downfall. Don’t let them. The fact that the clutter is (probably) everywhere is a good thing and a bad thing. The good news is, the more clutter you put away, the better your house will look. Start with one item that nags you daily—the magazines piling up in the family room or the hallway catch-all table and move on to another. Don’t get caught up in looking at old letters or magazines. If they’ve been sitting there for a while, chances are you won’t miss anything if you toss them.

Step 3: Think Big

Spring cleaning is the time to tackle those once-a-year tasks like washing the curtains and windows, defrosting the freezer, storing away your winter clothes and figuring out which clothes to give away. Think in the big picture sense to get an idea of what exactly you need to do. If you separate everything by room or section of the house instead of which exact things you need to do all at once, you won’t feel as overwhelmed.

Step 4: Compartmentalize

Rome wasn’t built in a day. And no one ever got their spring cleaning done in a day unless you’re Super Woman. Maybe you’ll tackle the holiday decorations area in the basement on your day off or color-code your closet after dropping the kids off at practice. The key here is to make a list of what you want to do and when and stick to it. If you spread out multiple tasks over multiple days, you won’t feel pressured to get everything done in a day or in a weekend.

Step 5: Multi-task and Make It Easy for Yourself

Throw in a load of laundry in the middle of cleaning the stove, place items next to the stairs for the next time you go up/down so that you don’t have to make extra trips, keep all your cleaning supplies in a bucket or something easy to carry so you don’t have to go downstairs—for the THIRD time to grab that bottle of bleach. Don’t underestimate the importance of this! Multi-tasking and putting like tasks together will cut down your cleaning time significantly.
